So why not get in touch with us today to discuss how we can help?
Proofreading and editing – what’s the difference?
Generally, editing is a more hands-on type of review than proofreading. It can involve major changes being made to the text if there are good reasons for doing so.
Proofreading is at the opposite end of the scale, and may often be restricted to the identification of issues rather than any action taken to amend them.
At ARP Writing, we have a completely flexible approach, based upon the extent of editorial input you require. If you want us to completely re-write sections of your work, we can do that. Or perhaps you need only the lightest of touches – for example, in relation to essays where course rules forbid certain kinds of error correction by someone else. Whatever your situation, we can tailor our review to the level you need.
What is involved in proofreading and editing?
There are a surprisingly large number of considerations that go into quality writing – especially if that writing has an important purpose to fulfil. We assess a wide range of aspects when proofreading and editing, including:
- Spelling (and catching pesky typos)
- Grammar
- Punctuation
- Structure
- Flow
- Tone
- Stylistic choices (and keeping them consistent)
- Coherence of points or arguments
- Whether the writing achieves your intended objectives
Some of our previous proofreading and editing projects
- Assisting a client to proofread and edit their book on business skills.
- Editing a long-form letter addressed to a government enquiry, referencing a range of sources and presenting a logical and structured line of argument.
- Proofreading a number of student essays on a variety of topics, and ensuring all feedback given complied with all of their respective course guidelines.
How can having an editor or proofreader help you?
Few things will make a worse impression on a reader than basic mistakes with spelling and grammar. It doesn’t matter if that reader is a potential customer, an examiner, or just a visitor to your website, if they don’t have to keep reading, the chances are they won’t.
But there’s much more to be gained from an editor than correcting typos. You want your writing to flow easily for the reader and to convey whatever message, points, arguments, or information you wish to get across in the best possible way.
For example, with writing for business marketing purposes, you have to send your sales message loud and clear, using a style and tone which will speak to your reader. Your message will have more strength if it engages your audience – and it’s never been more difficult to hold on to someone’s attention.
And with so many different aspects to bear in mind when writing, it’s easy to lose sight of some of them along the way. You can get so wrapped up in the words you want to say that you can’t always ‘see’ what’s on the page and what parts are actually still left inside your head.
A specialist editor gives you an experienced pair of eyes looking at your work – detached from all the thoughts, ideas, self-edits, and second guesses that went into creating it.
You get a fresh perspective.
Effective editing is crucial to achieving the best from your written work.
